Situated within the Mayoral campus in Intelhorce, Málaga, the Mayoral New Warehouse Logistics Center represents a harmonious fusion of modern architecture with the existing industrial landscape. Designed by System Arquitectura, this innovative facility stands as a testament to urban planning principles, seamlessly integrating into its surroundings while prioritizing functionality.
Embracing Urban Context
The project’s location adjacent to the protected warehouse designed by Vázquez Molezún posed a unique challenge and opportunity. With a programmatic requirement for a high-storage facility spanning over 15,000 square meters and reaching a height of 20 meters, the design team aimed to maintain harmony with the existing structure. This integration extended beyond mere aesthetics to embody a shared language rooted in the textile industry, honoring the heritage of both buildings.
Design Innovation
Two key design concepts emerged to address the challenge: first, a departure from the conventional rectangular prism by curving the facades, creating a softer transition between the new and existing buildings. Second, the exploration of a textile-inspired envelope to establish a visual dialogue with the original warehouse. The use of arches subdivided into smaller elements evokes the imagery of a building wrapped in fabric, reminiscent of artistic expressions by renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
Technical Excellence
The project’s success rests on two fundamental pillars: prefabrication and energy efficiency. Leveraging advanced BIM technology and a high degree of prefabrication, the entire structure was meticulously assembled on-site, ensuring precision and adherence to timelines. The triangulated tubular steel structure, manufactured in Lalín, Galicia, boasts impressive spans of up to 32 meters, while the facade combines translucent polycarbonate with micro-perforated zinc sheeting to optimize natural lighting and thermal performance.
