Lead architect Thiago Passos embarked on a mission to transform this centrally located space into a sanctuary that seamlessly integrates the indoors with the outdoors, evoking a sense of tranquility and harmony.
Design Philosophy: Embracing Japanese Influence
At the core of the Tatuí Apartment’s design ethos lies a deep appreciation for Japanese architecture and its emphasis on natural elements. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design principles, the project sought to infuse the space with a sense of serenity and connection to nature. This vision manifested through the strategic use of natural textures, abundant natural lighting, and a palette of light colors that complement the lush greenery of the surrounding gardens.
Tsuboniwa: Courtyard Garden Redefined
Central to the design concept is the incorporation of Tsuboniwa, a traditional Japanese architectural element that symbolizes a courtyard garden enclosed within a building. In the case of the Tatuí Apartment, Tsuboniwa serves as a visual link between the living room, dining area, and kitchen, creating a seamless flow of space while infusing the interiors with the essence of a tranquil winter garden.
Shakkei: Borrowed Scenery in Urban Oasis
Echoing the concept of Shakkei, or “borrowed scenery,” the balcony of the Tatuí Apartment embraces the surrounding urban landscape as an integral part of its design. By incorporating elements of the background scenery, such as the flamboyant treetop, the balcony transforms into a verdant oasis that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling urban environment of São Paulo.
Integration of Spaces: Fluidity and Functionality
Through thoughtful renovation, the social area of the apartment has been transformed into a spacious and cohesive living space that seamlessly integrates the kitchen, dining room, living area, and TV space. Pivoting glass doors offer flexibility, allowing for the seamless flow of natural light while providing the option to isolate the kitchen when desired.
Harmony in Materials and Craftsmanship
The interior design of the Tatuí Apartment embraces a harmonious blend of materials and craftsmanship, with American oak wood flooring complementing the natural wood joinery of Paricá. Original facade walls were peeled and painted white, lending a rustic charm to the space, while accents of green from the lush landscaping add vibrancy to the serene palette.
Bespoke Furniture: Functional Elegance
In addition to crafting the entire carpentry of the apartment, Passos Arquitetura designed bespoke furniture pieces to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the space. The sofa, designed as a centerpiece of integration, offers versatility for relaxation and socialization, while the dining table showcases Japanese-inspired joinery with a simple and lightweight design, adapting effortlessly to diverse environments.
