Situated in Tainan, Taiwan’s historic city, the Floating Veranda project by TA Architect is nestled adjacent to a roundabout. The site’s unique formation is delineated by a circular line and an organic cutline, characteristic of Tainan’s old city charm.
Drawing Inspiration from Local Urban Fabric
TA Architect drew inspiration from the interconnected overhangs of storefronts, reminiscent of Tainan’s iconic urban feature, the Veranda. These verandas, serving as sheltered passageways, have become an integral part of the city’s urban landscape. By elevating the veranda, the architects aimed to create a plaza surrounding the roundabout, giving the illusion of floating.
Elevated Design Concept
Elevating the veranda along the site boundary not only enhances its visual prominence but also serves practical functions. The separation between the veranda and the main building aids in energy efficiency, particularly crucial for the office building’s operations. Moreover, the bridge-like structure underneath allows for seamless pedestrian movement during inclement weather, creating a unique experience of walking beneath the sheltered overhangs.
Interactive Design Elements
The innovative design of the overhangs facilitates an interactive experience during rainfall, as water cascades down from both sides, adding an element of playfulness. Additionally, the floating bridge is expected to evolve over time, altering the interplay of light and shadow on the plaza and surrounding roads, thereby enhancing the dynamic nature of the urban environment.
The Floating Veranda project by TA Architect not only pays homage to Tainan’s architectural heritage but also introduces innovative design concepts that redefine the city’s urban fabric, creating memorable spaces for residents and visitors alike.
