Situated in Pak Chong, Thailand, Yellow-Mini Café is an exemplary coffee shop interior designed by JOYS Architects. With an area of 170 m², this project, led by architects Suebsai Jittakasem, Prasert Ananthayanont, and Nutt La-iad-on, seamlessly integrates nature into its design to enhance the perception of the site’s hidden features.
Elevating Natural Features
The location of the project boasts hidden features like a slight slope and tall vertical trees, which may go unnoticed without entering the site. The design aims to elevate these features by using a flat plane that contrasts with the site’s slope, allowing occupants to perceive the natural condition of the location.
The Functional Roof Plane
The flat plane serves as the roof of the building, becoming the fundamental architectural element. It not only highlights the slope of the site but also provides a functional space underneath. Activities such as sitting, lying, and walking take place under this roof, allowing occupants to interact with nature.
Respecting Nature’s Dynamics
The design raises questions about respecting nature’s dynamics, particularly regarding the ground surface. Is it necessary to keep the original ground in place, or does nature’s truth lie in its ever-changing state? The design addresses these questions by preserving excavated spaces from the construction process, which now serve as rooms for drinking and eating.
Integrating Structure, Construction, and Space
Yellow-Mini Café seamlessly integrates structure, construction, and architectural space into its design. Structural traces, such as variations in roof thickness and supporting elements’ height, are visible. Construction traces, like different-colored concrete foundations, add texture to the space. Architectural spaces are intricately linked to the foundation levels and supporting elements’ heights, creating a cohesive design.
Conclusion
Yellow-Mini Café by JOYS Architects exemplifies a harmonious integration of nature into architectural design. By elevating the site’s hidden features and respecting nature’s dynamics, the café provides a unique space for patrons to connect with their surroundings while enjoying their coffee. The seamless integration of structure, construction, and space further enhances the café’s aesthetic appeal, creating a memorable experience for visitors.
