Nestled on a small rocky island in Lake Suontee, southern Finland, Summerhouse V stands as a testament to modern island living. Designed by Playa Architects, this serene retreat offers a perfect blend of contemporary comfort and natural beauty.
Embracing Island Living
The summerhouse replaces an existing fishing cabin from the 1960s and a sauna building from the 1980s, providing a more spacious and functional space for the client family. Situated in the heart of the island on the flattest and most picturesque spot, Summerhouse V boasts stunning views of the open lake while being strategically shielded from strong winds.
Architectural Design
The building envelope features a protective saddle roof with extended eaves, ensuring shelter for outdoor spaces while framing panoramic views of the lake. External walls provide additional protection from the elements, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living areas.
Interior Space
The main interior space, comprising the kitchen and living room, showcases the distinctive saddle roof and offers uninterrupted views of the lake and the evening sun. The use of natural materials such as spruce, combined with elegant detailing, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the summerhouse.
Sustainable Construction
Summerhouse V boasts a non-insulated 200 mm thick Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) frame, shaped like logs for easy transportation and assembly. CNC machining of the CLT frame enables simple yet sophisticated detailing, while wood fiber insulation ensures energy efficiency. The building frame and interior claddings are primarily made of spruce, maintaining a natural and untreated aesthetic.
Conclusion
Completed in 2021, Summerhouse V exemplifies the harmonious integration of modern architecture with the tranquil surroundings of Lake Suontee. With its thoughtful design, sustainable construction, and breathtaking views, this island retreat offers a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation amidst the beauty of nature.
