0

The transformation of the Seokyo branch building of KB Kookmin Bank into the KB Youth Step by the Faculty of Hongik University School of Architecture signifies a shift towards creating a cultural hub for the youth. Originating from the notion of providing public seating convenience within the vicinity, this endeavor seeks to integrate a terraced element into the structure, thereby opening up a private bank building to the bustling city life surrounding it. By reimagining the space as a stair plaza spanning from the first floor to the second, the KB Youth Step emerges as a vibrant public arena for events, gatherings, and various activities, promoting inclusivity and community engagement.

Exploring Topology

At the core of the design lies the exploration of topology, intertwining architectural and urban methodologies to craft spatial structures that exude a sense of openness. The strategically folded stairs seamlessly guide visitors from the basement to the rooftop, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. By fostering continuous circulation and integration with the urban fabric, the KB Youth Step transcends traditional architectural constraints, embodying a dynamic connection between the building and the city.

Preserving Historicity

Respecting the building’s historical significance, the façade retains its original charm, serving as a testament to the city’s rich heritage. From the preserved indoor stairways to the enduring brick walls, every element pays homage to the memory of the past, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the narrative of the city. This harmonious blend of history and modernity creates a captivating spatial experience that resonates with both tradition and innovation.

Promoting Flexibility

The versatility of the KB Youth Step extends beyond its physical structure, offering a multifunctional space adaptable to various purposes and activities. Equipped with foldable screens and flexible seating arrangements, the indoor stair space effortlessly transitions from a performance hall to a cozy reading nook or a vibrant book café. Meanwhile, the outdoor stairs and rooftop space serve as dynamic venues for contemplation, relaxation, and lively gatherings,
