Architectural Transformation
The refurbishment of the BMW South Africa Pty Ltd. Head Office, originally designed by Hans Hallen, represents a harmonious blend of modernization and sustainability. Boogertman + Partners Architects undertook the task of rejuvenating this architecturally iconic building to align with BMW’s corporate identity while incorporating South African energy efficiency principles.
Embracing Sustainability
The renovation aimed to achieve a GREENSTAR 5 as-built rating, emphasizing energy efficiency and sustainability. Minimal changes were made to the outer façade, preserving its elegant dark brick appearance. However, the inner façade underwent significant modifications to enhance visual connections with the landscaped courtyard, optimize natural light transmission, and improve interior comfort levels.
Innovative Design Features
The integration of fully glazed louvered façades and solar tracking louvers facilitated seamless indoor-outdoor flow and transparency. Adaptive interior spaces were created through carefully orchestrated interventions, promoting efficiency and flexibility in office layouts. Universal access principles were also applied to ensure ease of movement for individuals with physical impairments.
Holistic Approach to Comfort and Efficiency
Efforts to enhance thermal comfort and energy efficiency included a complete reinvention of lighting and ventilation systems, necessitating the establishment of a satellite Energy Centre. Additionally, the replacement of old slate with contemporary Zinc sheeting and the reuse of slate in landscaping features contributed to the building’s aesthetic and sustainability goals.
Exemplifying BMW’s Brand Image
The revitalized BMW South Africa Head Office exemplifies BMW’s commitment to design excellence, technological innovation, and attention to detail. By integrating sustainable design principles with modern aesthetics, the office reflects BMW’s world-renowned brand image of passion, technology, and innovation.
