In the 1970s, the Koninklijke Coöperatieve Cosun U.A. (Suikerunie / the Dutch Sugar Union) sought a new headquarters in Breda, leading to the construction of a distinctive building designed by Wim Quist. Over the years, the site evolved, but in 2011, Cosun/Suikerunie vacated the premises, leaving behind a vacant structure with significant historical and architectural value.
Reimagining the Space
EVA architecten embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize the Cosun site, envisioning it as a vibrant residential community. With meticulous attention to detail and guidance from architectural history, the team sought to honor the building’s legacy while adapting it to contemporary living standards.
Architectural Features
The original cube-shaped building, nestled within a park-like setting, features deep recesses and a uniform brick façade, exuding understated elegance. The façade facing the park boasts a high-tech aesthetic, characterized by a complete glass façade overlaid with movable slats for sun protection.
Adaptive Reuse and Spatial Flexibility
EVA architecten’s design ethos prioritizes flexibility and diversity, resulting in 39 apartments ranging from 60 to 150 square meters. By reimagining the layout and activating previously underutilized spaces such as the basement and roof, the team maximized spatial potential while preserving the building’s structural integrity.
Integration of Outdoor Spaces
Inspired by the original design principles, outdoor spaces play a pivotal role in the transformation. Winter gardens and rooftop terraces provide residents with private retreats, seamlessly blending indoor comfort with outdoor tranquility.
Sustainable Solutions
Through innovative insulation techniques, smart installations, and heat-cold storage systems, the project meets stringent energy efficiency standards. Yet, sustainability transcends mere technical solutions; it embodies the ethos of preserving architectural heritage and fostering long-term community engagement.
Conclusion: A Harmonious Blend of Past and Present
The Cosun 1/Suikerunie Apartments project exemplifies the delicate balance between honoring history and embracing innovation. By reinterpreting architectural elements, activating latent spaces, and fostering a sense of community, EVA architecten has breathed new life into a cultural landmark, ensuring its relevance for generations to come.
