Redesigning Retail Space: Wooden Pavilion by the River – FEI PATISSERIE

0

Located in Foshan, China, the Wooden Pavilion by the River – FEI PATISSERIE is a retail interior design project undertaken by NEME Studio Architects. Situated within a granary built in the 1980s, this project aimed to transform an 80 m² glass box into a comfortable and inviting space while harmonizing with the natural surroundings.

Embracing the Setting

The design site, adjacent to the Shunde Lunjiao Dachong river, presented challenges such as intense sunlight and humidity. To address this, a wooden pavilion was introduced between the original glass box and the outdoor area. This pavilion provides shade and a cool breeze, creating a relaxing atmosphere for visitors.

Transformative Design

The wooden pavilion alters the scale of the space, lowering the line of sight and extending the sense of indoor space with additional wooden columns. Its dark color filters out excess noise, allowing visitors to feel closer to nature. Large areas of wood and plywood are used for flooring and skirting, enhancing the connection with the outdoor environment.

Blending Industrial Precision with Nature

The project strikes a balance between industrial precision and natural elements. Materials like rough granite, warm ceramic lamps, and curtains soften the space, reducing the industrial feel of the original galvanized steel and glass-aluminum curtain wall. This integration allows the patisserie to seamlessly blend with its surroundings.

Customized Tables for Varied Experiences

Considering the diverse needs of visitors, custom-designed tables were created for different positions indoors and outdoors. These tables cater to various activities, from enjoying the outdoor scenery to intimate gatherings indoors. Additionally, wooden railings were installed for holding snacks outdoors, enhancing the overall experience.

A Play of Light and Nature

The design maximizes the interaction between sunlight and natural elements throughout the day. Sunlight enters the space through wooden windows in the morning, illuminating the interior with a warm glow. In the afternoon, outdoor plants are highlighted, casting a greenish hue indoors. At sunset, the wooden pavilions are bathed in the shimmering light reflected from the river, creating a serene ambiance.

Conclusion

The Wooden Pavilion by the River – FEI PATISSERIE exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a retail space into a harmonious oasis that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. By prioritizing comfort, functionality, and aesthetics, NEME Studio Architects have created a space where visitors can indulge in a delightful culinary experience while immersing themselves in the beauty of nature.
