In the summer of 2012, the Courtyard of Averbode Abbey underwent a rejuvenation, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its centuries-old architecture and the grandeur of its Baroque church. At the heart of the courtyard lies a serene water mirror, reflecting the surrounding buildings and offering a tranquil spot for contemplation or relaxation. This revitalized space serves as a gathering point for people of all ages, fostering a sense of community within the region.
A Historical Evolution
The history of Averbode Abbey dates back to 1134, witnessing various transformations over the centuries. Originally, the courtyard consisted of three narrow cobblestone pathways amidst grassy terrain. However, in the early 19th century, the square began to take shape in its current form, surrounded by the abbots’ quarters, presbytery, and gatehouse. In 1976, the square underwent a significant change, transitioning from a green space to a stone-paved area primarily used for parking. Recognizing the need for a revitalized public space, plans were set in motion in 2010 to reconstruct the courtyard, spanning approximately 5,000m².
Harmonizing with History
The redesigned square embraces simplicity and harmony with its surroundings, complementing rather than overshadowing the historic buildings. Visitors entering through the gatehouse are greeted with a picturesque view of the abbots’ quarters, accentuated by the shimmering reflection in the water mirror. During rainy days, the mirror collects rainwater, creating a reflective surface that adds to the courtyard’s allure. The flexibility of the space allows for drainage when needed, ensuring usability for various events.
Enhancing Public Space
Integration of ancient Tilia trees, cobblestone paths, and the old periphery wall adds to the charm of the courtyard. New parking spaces for visitors with reduced mobility and facilities for cyclists further enhance accessibility. As night falls, subtle lighting illuminates the square, accentuating pathways and highlighting architectural features. Custom-designed panels, bins, and bicycle racks blend seamlessly with the abbey’s historical context, crafted from dark rusted steel reminiscent of the abbey’s façades.
Reflecting Tradition
Respecting the abbey’s rich heritage, historical information is subtly integrated into the square’s design. Engravings of the monastic rule serve as reminders of the abbey’s spiritual legacy. With each element carefully considered and thoughtfully implemented, the Courtyard of Averbode Abbey stands as a testament to the timeless beauty of tradition and the enduring spirit of community.
