Introduction
The Tasik Creative and Innovation Center, conceived by SHAU Indonesia, embodies a unique ‘socio-climatic’ design approach tailored to the distinct characteristics of West Java, Indonesia. Commissioned by former Governor Ridwan Kamil, the center aims to nurture emerging creative communities and individual artists in Tasikmalaya, a vibrant city renowned for its weaving craftsmanship.
Contextual Design
Situated within the Dadaha sports complex, a popular destination for locals, the center integrates seamlessly with its surroundings while retaining the existing parking lot. Elevated auditorium and exhibition spaces allow for ground-level parking and facilitate the creation of a grand seating staircase overlooking a public plaza. This plaza, located at the southwestern side of the main entrance, will feature contemporary local sculptures, offering a dynamic outdoor space for various activities.
Tropical Cultural Building
Designed as a tropical cultural hub, the center features balconies, terraces, and semi-outdoor spaces that beckon visitors to explore. A designated route through the building, passing by the exhibition area, enhances its public character and accessibility, allowing visitors to engage with artworks and workshops throughout the day.
Collaborative Spaces
In addition to exhibition areas, the center houses co-working spaces and an auditorium for events and screenings. The programming of the building was informed by URGTSK, a local creative community in Tasikmalaya, through a participatory process that ensured user needs were addressed from the outset.
Sustainable Design
The building’s façade incorporates woven elements to reduce solar heat gain and provide shading, with panel densities tailored to the program and external views. Energy conservation measures include selective air conditioning usage in designated areas, with natural cross-ventilation utilized during workshop events and functions to minimize reliance on artificial cooling.

The Tasik Creative and Innovation Center stands as a beacon of creativity and sustainability in West Java, fostering artistic expression while respecting the region’s socio-climatic context. Through thoughtful design and community engagement, SHAU Indonesia has created a dynamic space that celebrates local culture and supports the growth of creative endeavors in Tasikmalaya and beyond.
