Transforming Convento do Beato: A Modern Cultural Center

The Convento do Beato complex, comprising a series of historic buildings with origins spanning different epochs, has undergone a significant transformation under the visionary direction of RISCO. Originally housing an old church, remnants of a convent, and structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries primarily used for industrial purposes, the complex now stands as a vibrant cultural center in Lisbon.

Restoring and Revitalizing

RISCO’s project for Beato Lux encompassed the remodeling of the Events Centre and the restoration and repurposing of the remaining buildings. This included transforming the old church into a hub for various services and converting the industrial buildings into residential units. The comprehensive undertaking also involved the construction of two parking facilities and outdoor spaces to enhance accessibility and usability.

Bridging Tradition and Modernity

The renovation project, initiated in 2018 and set for completion in 2024, prioritized both functionality and aesthetics. Improvements were made to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors attending events such as parties, corporate meetings, and product launches. Technical upgrades included telecommunications, energy, and security system replacements, as well as enhancements to the kitchen facilities and alterations to window and door configurations.

Creative Solutions and Sensitivity to Heritage

RISCO’s approach to the project was characterized by a delicate balance between preserving the historical integrity of the site and integrating contemporary elements. The design of the administrative building, courtyards, and new sanitary facilities showcased the firm’s innovative yet respectful approach to architectural heritage. Notably, walkways for emergency exits in the library were seamlessly incorporated to blend with the existing structure.

Enhancing Functionality and Comfort

The transformation of the cloister, a pivotal space for large-scale events, involved addressing issues of smoke clearance, thermal insulation, and acoustic comfort. The introduction of a new ceiling system, featuring orthogonally arranged trusses illuminated by skylights, significantly improved interior comfort and sound quality. The integration of air-conditioning ducts into the structure further enhanced the usability of the space.

Harmonizing Old and New

Throughout the project, RISCO embraced a nuanced design approach, respecting the historical significance of the site while introducing contemporary interventions where appropriate. The juxtaposition of traditional architectural elements with modern functionalities created a dynamic and harmonious environment suitable for a range of cultural activities.

Conclusion: Preserving Heritage, Embracing Modernity

The renovation and transformation of Convento do Beato into a vibrant cultural center stand as a testament to RISCO’s commitment to preserving architectural heritage while meeting the demands of modern functionality. By seamlessly integrating innovative design solutions with historical structures, the project celebrates the rich legacy of the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.
