Transforming Urban Spaces Affordable Housing in Milan by C+S Architects

0

Nestled at the northern edge of the Highrise Village, adjacent to Cascina Merlata Park, lies Plot R11—a testament to collaborative innovation in urban development. Initially conceived as a gated community, architects at C+S Architects proposed a bold redesign, dividing the plot to create a vibrant public space. This transformation not only fosters community engagement but also establishes a seamless connection between the village and the park, redefining the concept of urban living.

Reimagining Public Spaces

Inspired by the iconic Venetian campo, the architects envisioned a dynamic public square—a focal point that bridges the gap between two residential towers. This communal space, reminiscent of traditional Italian piazzas, serves as a gathering spot for residents, fostering a sense of community identity and interaction. By integrating ramps and playful elements, such as benches and recreational areas, the square transcends its utilitarian function, evolving into a vibrant hub for leisure and socialization.

Challenging Gated Community Norms

Central to the project’s ethos is the rejection of gated community paradigms. Instead of enclosing the space, C+S Architects opted for an inclusive design, seamlessly integrating the square with the surrounding landscape. Crafted from white Prun stone, the square exudes elegance and accessibility, inviting residents and visitors alike to partake in its communal offerings. The deliberate use of monochromatic elements reinforces the square’s urban character, emphasizing its role as a nexus of connectivity and shared experience.

Affordable Housing: A Sustainable Vision

Comprising two towers spanning 10,830 square meters, the development prioritizes affordability and sustainability. A total of 103 apartments, constructed in accordance with regional regulations, offer accessible housing solutions to residents. Beyond affordability, the project embodies environmental stewardship, boasting energy-efficient features such as geothermal heating, photovoltaic systems, and controlled ventilation. This commitment to sustainability extends to the towers’ design, which maximizes natural light and ventilation while minimizing environmental impact.

Architectural Ingenuity and Aesthetics

The towers, characterized by their curved profiles and strategic orientation, offer panoramic views of the surrounding greenery. Clad in a mosaic of glass tesserae, the facades evoke the timeless elegance of Italian architecture, paying homage to iconic masters such as Gio Ponti. The dynamic interplay of light and color, facilitated by the irregular mosaic pattern, imbues the facades with a sense of vitality and movement, transforming them into living canvases that evolve with the passage of time.

A Visionary Urban Legacy

With the completion of Plot R11 and its accompanying square, C+S Architects have not only redefined urban living but also contributed to Milan’s contemporary architectural landscape. By embracing inclusivity, sustainability, and aesthetic innovation, the project serves as a testament to the transformative power of collaborative urban design. As cities worldwide grapple with pressing housing challenges, the Affordable Housing in Milan project stands as a beacon of hope—a model for creating vibrant, resilient communities for generations to come.
